Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre Learning Resources for School Groups

BC FIRST NATIONS CULTURAL LEARNING RESOURCES

We, the Squamish and Lil'wat people, proudly invite you to learn more about our BC First Nations cultures. We have lived in our territories from time immemorial, and we have developed an intimate relationship with the land and all that is contained within it. We and the land are one - and our stories tell lessons about living on the land, and of our shared history.

Ideas for Teachers: Interactive learning in all disciplines - Customize your class experience towards learning objectives

1. Identify and discuss differing points of view on a selected historical event or issue - the Chief Joe Capilano blanket.
2. Use our Territory Maps to translate information from maps to other forms of communication
3. Give examples how the technologies of the Longhouse and Istken met shelter needs.
4. Learn how canoes were crafted through technology to meet transportation needs.
5. Try traditional foods and learn the technologies used to meet food acquisition and preparation needs.
6. Show the Nations artistic expression to their culture through the art of welcome figures, drums, paddle rattles.
7. Explore the Great Hall exhibits and identifying the types of work done by people within the community.
8. Assess diverse concepts of Canadian identity through the Storytelling or the Musical tour
9. Use the Fishing and Forestry exhibits to relate ancient human practices that affected the physical environment to modern counterparts.
10. Discover the Regalia and identify factors that influence identity, society, and culture.

Let our BC First Nations history, cultures, and stories inspire you.
