May 9, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Feature Exhibition Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes opens Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, B.C.

May 9, 2024, Skwxwú7mesh / Líl̓wat7úl (Whistler, BC) – The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) invites guests to experience its latest exhibition: Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes.

The SLCC’s second spring feature exhibition shares the history of the Chiefs of eleven communities that came together to sign the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes, on May 10, 1911. These St̓at̓y̓emc Nation communities including the Lil’wat Nation share the same culture and language with Southern, Northern, and the Lakes dialects, and they gather together each year to celebrate Declaration Days.

Curator Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal shares “The signing of the Declaration of the Lillooet Tribes is integral to the Lil’wat Nation and the St̓at̓y̓emc Nation together. It provides a foundation for us to follow and has guided us, in our work since then. It’s a great reminder of what can happen when you work together.”

The SLCC gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia, the First People’s Cultural Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the British Columbia Arts Council.

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre invites Media, Nation Members, SLCC Members, and public guests to view the exhibition in Gallery 2 of the Museum, opening at 12pm on Friday, May 10, 2024, and running until December 1, 2024. A Curator Tour will be available for Media/Members/Allyship Partners on Thursday, May 16, at 3 pm.

The SLCC is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm (Closed Monday), and occasionally closes early for private events – plan your visit at slcc.ca/visit
