Put together a cedar paddle necklace with pre-cut cedar paddles. Use beads to decorate the necklace and make it your own. The canoe paddle is a symbol of the journey and the spirit of unity and team work. This craft is a great option for young kids.

Unlock the secrets of braiding with a single piece of leather, mastering the ‘magic braid’ or ‘mystery braid’ to fashion your own Cuff Bracelet. This technique, known as the 3-part inside trick braid, leaves both ends of the bracelet intact. Buckskin, carries deep cultural significance as a staple in indigenous clothing. Its creation demands great care and respect, reflecting the sacred teachings of utilizing every part of the resources we are gifted, taking only what is necessary. Take pride in creating your own small piece of Leather Regalia, honoring tradition while embracing your own unique expression.

Use buckskin, beads and hide lacing to craft a handmade medicine bag! Traditionally, medicine bags were used hold medicinal herbs or treasures that provide protection for the wearer who may be on a spirit quests, hunting and gathering, journeying to neighbouring community, or everyday protection and reminders. Some of the more common contents for medicine bags are tobacco, sage, sweet grass or other items deemed special or spiritual, such as crystals or small carvings.

Make your own miniature version of a traditional Salish hand drum using deer hide, sinew and a frame, then customize it with design work, feather and beads. The drum is not just a music maker, but a voice for the soul within the music. The drum is more than a musical instrument to those who own and play it, as it is considered to have a life of its own and is regarded as having its own powerful spirit. In the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations’ traditions the drum symbolizes the heartbeat of our people.

Weave together a vibrant dream catcher with feathers, beads, sinew and a suede wrapped hoop. Dream catchers are a craft shown to us from our neighboring First Nations trading partners who lived in the prairies and East Coast of Canada. They are hung in windows to allow good dreams to pass through while entangling bad dreams in the web which then perish at the first light of dawn.

Make a wooden paddle rattle using wooden pre-cut wood and copper beads. Gluing is required to assemble the rattle. If time allows, you will also have the opportunity to paint your rattle. Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations rattles or shakers are an instrument that is used in ceremonies, community songs or gifted to newborn babies to repel bad spirits. All Nations used the rattle in one form or another, as simple as a handful of stones shaken in ones hands to the more intricately adorned rattles that are used by many Nations.

Our Scavenger Hunt provides school groups the opportunity to discover the importance and meaning of different exhibit pieces located throughout the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. Teachers and students work together to find information and complete tasks.
