The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre presents Boarder X, a compilation of interdisciplinary contemporary art by Indigenous artists from across Canada who surf, skate and snowboard. Boarder X presents these practices as challenges to conformity and status quo, demonstrating knowledge and performed relationships with the land.
As people of the land, Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation members interact with our territories beyond traditional methods; we engage in modern sport. Locally-based organizations such as Indigenous Lifesport Academy (formerly the First Nations Snowboard Team) and Indigenous Women Outdoors highlight the popularity of outdoor recreation amongst Indigenous people; Boarder X, therefore, is a confluence between sport and culture that shares this story.
Featuring sculptures, installations, paintings, weavings, and video, Boarder X will activate different spaces throughout the venue and lead viewers on an immersive journey through the lens of the artists and their relations with the land.
“This exhibit highlights that Indigenous people engage with our territories beyond traditional methods. We have a lot of Ambassadors who participated on the First Nations Snowboard Team (now Indigenous Life Sport Academy), and skateboard. Indigenous people are athletic in nature; we are excited to feature this exhibit that looks at and acknowledges that truth.”
