20 Jun July Long Weekend at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler
FREE ADMISSION gratefully provided by Proud Partner CIBC
Join us on Saturday July 1 & Sunday July 2 to celebrate the spirit of Skwxwú7mesh and Líl̓wat7úl at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, a culmination of events celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Months with thoughtful and immersive programming. Honouring Truth and Reconciliation – we invite you to experience and connect with the living culture of the original people of the shared territory where Whistler resides.
Experience live carving with Master Carver Xwalacktun (Skwxwú7mesh / Kwakwak’wakw / Namgis), mentoring SLCC Apprentice Brandon Hall (Skwxwú7mesh) carving a pole for the Sister Poles project. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Squamish Nation’s Amalgamation on July 23, 2023, this carving incorporates designs that honour the sixteen villages who came together to form what is known today as Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Sister Poles project is a two-year immersive experience that will feature a Master Carver from the Lil’wat Nation mentoring an apprentice in 2024, and the two carvings will be sisters telling a complimentary story.
Connect with Cultural Ambassadors as they share craft activities, art, performances, storytelling, and guided tours of the museum. Hear Wilson Williams of Squamish Nation and Mayor Jack Crompton connect on “Rethinking Canada Day” – live recording for The Whistler Podcast. Admire environmental portraiture featuring people of Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Úxwumixw and the Lil’wat7ul, in the feature exhibition – UNCEDED: S7ulh Temíxw / Ti Tmicwkálha / Our Land – A Photographic Journey into Belonging – set in breathtaking locations throughout the Sea to Sky and where their territories meet in Whistler, BC.
