Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler welcomes guests to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Saturday, September 30.

September 22, 2023, (Whistler, BC) – The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler (SLCC) – the heart of Whistler’s authentic Indigenous experience, welcomes guests on Saturday, September 30 to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a full day of immersive programming. The SLCC is grateful to be supported by Proud Partner CIBC offering Free Admission on Saturday, September 30 along with programming supported by the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

September 30 will be a day of listening, learning and reflection at the SLCC, filled with programming throughout the Great Hall, Theatre, Galleries, and out on the Mezzanine patio. Visitors can hear the Guest Speaker Series, experience Spo7ez cultural sharing, carving demonstration, immersive crafts, First Nations-inspired cuisine and explore books for learning, authentic art and keepsakes.

In commemoration of the day of observation, guests can experience the extended programming on Saturday, September 30, or on Sunday, October 1 guests will be welcomed for regular operations including guided tours of the Museum. The SLCC Ambassadors will take Monday, October 2 to rest and be with family, and the SLCC returns to regular operations on October 3rd, open Tuesday through Sunday 10 am – 5 pm.

The SLCC has experienced unexpected flooding caused by a broken pipe that urgently requires repairs, and is forced to temporarily close starting Sunday, September 24 through Friday, September 29. The SLCC sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience, and looks forward to welcoming guests to visit through Saturday, September 23, 5 pm and when it reopens at 10 am on Saturday, September 30.

The SLCC welcomes community members and guests to show support by wearing orange to honour the children, survivors and families of Residential Schools for Orange Shirt Day / National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. The SLCC Gallery and Gift Shop offers Orange shirts – available for purchase in-store until 5 pm on September 23, and available for purchase online at slcc.ca/shop/orange-shirt, with pick-up available on Friday, September 29. Purchasing at the SLCC Gallery & Gift Shop supports authentic Indigenous Artists and meaningful employment for members of the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation.

Tuesday, October 3 to Sunday, October 8 will be the final week for guests to see the feature exhibition Unceded: A Photographic Journey into Belonging – a moving exhibition showcasing the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and the Lil̓wat7úl and their enduring presence and connection to the land. The 100 Years of Unity exhibition celebrating the Amalgamation of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) compliments the Unceded Exhibition well for guests looking to learn the area’s rich history.
