FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feature Exhibition Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ / skel7áw̓lh opens Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, B.C.
April 26, 2024, Skwxwú7mesh / Líl̓wat7úl (Whistler, BC) – The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) invites guests to experience its latest exhibition: Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ / skel7áw̓lh (The person who protects the land / Steward of the land)
The SLCC’s spring feature exhibition shares that the Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Úxwumixw and Líl̓wat7úl have been caring for their territory since the beginning of their creation stories. Their stories are written on the land, they use their stories to teach their history and virtues. The Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ (The person who protects the land) of the Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Úxwumixw and the skel7áw̓lh (Steward of the land) of the Líl̓wat7úl are roles shared by all of the responsible and respectable people of their Nations. Historically, there were some who specialized in certain areas but it was a role shared by all. In recent years the roles have been taken up by the Administration Departments who work with partners to care for the land.
This exhibition shares some of the work done to help restore the balance and harmony in the Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) territory and the Líl̓wat7úl (Lil’wat Nation) territory with our neighbours and partners.
Curator Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal shares “”It has been very interesting to learn more about the roles and responsibilities that we as Lil’wat Nation members have in caring for the land and to learn more about Squamish practices. I look forward to learning even more as people come in to visit the exhibition and connect to it from their own perspectives.”
The SLCC gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia, the First People’s Cultural Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the British Columbia Arts Council.
The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre invites Media, Nation Members, SLCC Allyship Partners, and SLCC Members to a Curator Tour on Tuesday April 30, at 3pm. Guests can view the exhibition in Gallery 3 of the Museum, opening on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and running until June 30, 2024. Guests can join a public Curator Tour at 1pm on Friday May 3.
