12 Jun Experience Revitalized Exhibit and Storytelling at the SLCC This Summer
This summer, the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) invites you to experience the revitalization of its permanent exhibitions—a powerful evolution of storytelling that brings new depth, voice, and cultural connection to the heart of Whistler.
Since opening in 2008, the SLCC has served as a place of sharing, learning, and inspiration, rooted in the partnership between the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation. Now, for the first time, the original storyboards in the Great Hall and Gallery One’s What We Treasure exhibit have been refreshed in collaboration with over 250 community members—from Elders to youth—ensuring the content reflects the authentic, living cultures of both Nations.
Through new interpretive content, imagery, and the use of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim and Ucwalmícwts languages, the revitalized exhibitions share contemporary perspectives, values, and teachings from the communities. The result is a deeper, more vibrant cultural experience—one that’s both rooted in ancestral knowledge and alive with current voices.
Storyboard Ceremony
The Storyboard Ceremony honoured community members who contributed to the revitalization of the SLCC’s permanent exhibition storyboards—bringing new stories, language, and cultural teachings to life. The permanent exhibition storyboards in the Great Hall and Gallery One have received a major revitalization to reflect the evolving stories and living cultures of the Squamish Nation and the Lil’wat Nation.
Honouring Ancestral Belongings
One of the meaningful additions to the permanent exhibit is the repatriation of ancestral belongings from the Canadian Museum of History, welcomed home by the Squamish Nation in January 2025. Items such as a wool blanket, cedar baskets, and traditional tools are now respectfully integrated into the collection, enriching the stories and cultural legacy shared at the SLCC.
Explore Through Story and Song
Visitors are encouraged to explore the revitalized space through immersive guided tours, led by Cultural Ambassadors who bring personal knowledge, lived experience, and heartfelt storytelling to each exhibit.
Three cultural tours are available throughout the day and are included with admission:
- What We Treasure Tour (hourly except 11 am and 3 pm)
- Legends of the Land Tour (11:00 am)
- Interpretive Forest Walk (3:00 pm)
Each tour features welcome songs, a short film, and authentic cultural teachings that bring the exhibits—and the connection to land to life. Tours are suitable for all ages and can also be arranged for group bookings.
Celebrate Living Cultures
The revitalization of the SLCC’s permanent exhibits is a celebration of cultural resilience, community voice, and intergenerational knowledge sharing. It embodies the shared commitment of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations to preserve, protect, and celebrate their distinct cultures within a world-class Indigenous-led cultural centre.
