Spring break is around the corner, and what better way to spend it than immersing yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations? The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) in Whistler invites you to join their Ambassadors for an unforgettable experience of crafting traditional Indigenous crafts on Saturdays and Wednesdays at 3 pm, starting March 13 – 30, 2024.
At the heart of Whistler’s authentic Indigenous experience is the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, a place where traditions come alive through immersive craft workshops. From medicine bags to dreamcatchers and traditional Salish drums, there’s something for everyone eager to delve into Indigenous crafts.
Medicine Bag Workshop:
Recommended for ages 8 and above, this workshop offers a 45-minute exploration into the creation of handmade medicine bags. Using buckskin, beads, and hide lacing, participants craft a pouch traditionally used to hold medicinal herbs or treasures that offer protection. Whether embarking on a spirit quest or seeking everyday reminders of spiritual connection, this workshop provides a glimpse into the sacred significance of medicine bags.
Dreamcatcher Workshop:
For those aged 10 and above, the Dreamcatcher Workshop offers a 1-hour journey into the intricate art of dreamcatcher weaving. Participants weave vibrant dreamcatchers using feathers, beads, sinew, and suede-wrapped hoops. Originating from First Nations trading partners in the prairies and East Coast of Canada, dreamcatchers symbolize protection, allowing good dreams to pass through while trapping bad dreams in their web until they perish with the dawn.
Salish Drum Making Workshop:
Craft a traditional Salish hand drum using deer hide and a cedar frame in this 2.5-hour workshop. More than just a musical instrument, the drum is regarded as a voice for the soul within the music, possessing its own powerful spirit. Symbolizing the heartbeat or medicine, the Salish drum holds profound cultural significance, connecting participants to ancient traditions and spiritual realms.
